Originally from Reading, England, she studied Natural Sciences at Newnham College, Cambridge. Following this she stayed in Cambridge to study for a PhD researching methods to improve materials used for treatment of heart disease. Currently she is concentrating on the use of collagen and elastin to develop scaffolds with a pore structure which mimics the extracellular matrix of blood vessels for use as vascular grafts. Materials properties such as mechanical strength and surface roughness and how these change with composition, as well as the biocompatibility of the material, will affect the response of the body to and the lifetime of novel vascular grafts.
