Funding your conference
Funding your conference
There are several key sources of funding. Primarily there may be a small amount of money in your research grant allocated to attending conferences but this will cover often less than one conference for the whole duration of your project. Therefore, you should still always apply for external sources of funding in the first instance. The general principle would be to try as many as possible but, remember that most will only pay one time in 12 months. Check out any societies you may belong to or journals specific to your field; they may award small grants to students.
The most relevant and accessible sources of funding are presented here:
- Your College: Many Colleges have travel/conference grants e.g. from King's College and Newnham College. Grad students can simply ask about these types of grant at their college's finance office.
- Armourers and Brasiers
- British Council (for overseas students, postdocs and visitors)
- Cambridge Philosophical Society
- European Society for Biomaterials
- IoM 3
- Royal Academy of Engineering
- Royal Microscopical Society
- Royal Society
- UKSB
NB: Always check the terms and conditions, deadlines and ensure that there is plenty of time to get references if requested.
Always remember to send a note of thanks if you are awarded some money!
